It began as a party, grew into a band, evolved into a sound, and emerged as an institution. Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band (aka the Booty Band) has gone through many changes since their fated onset in 2002. Today they are ready to shake the world, one cheek at a time.

The band’s first official studio release, Now You Know, debuted in 2007 to critical acclaim. The Booty Band received Home Grown Music Network’s Album of the Year and Band of the Year awards, as well as the #3 best regional album from WNCW, one of the top Triple A stations in the country. Awe-inspiring live shows, powerful original compositions, and crowd-pleasing presentations have helped the Booty Band build a rock-solid nationwide fanbase. Having completed three national tours in 2010 alone, the band has worked hard and done well to keep this fanbase fired up and growing fast. They have secured headlining slots at many prestigious festivals including Wakarusa, Jam Cruise, Bear Creek, Jazz Aspen, Long Beach Funk Fest, Rock Boat, Bele Chere (six consecutive years), Floyd Fest, and Smile Fest.
Their second studio album, Doin’ It Hard, is a reflection of the band’s approach to music, touring, performing, recording, and life in general. Recorded in June 2010 at the City of Progress Studios in Miami, FL under the cultivated ear of DJ Le Spam (Andrew Yeomanson) Doin’ It Hard is Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band – next-generation, redefined for a new decade. Doin’ It Hard is slated for a May 2011 release and will be available on 12” vinyl, compact disc, and digital download from all of your favorite online providers.

Getting to know YMBFBB:

1. What was the best show you have ever played and why?
The best show we will ever play will be at Castaways in Ithaca, NY on Saturday, July 16th 2011. It is written.

2. Who is the funniest band member and Why?

JP, our guitar player, is pretty hilarious. Impeccable timing. In comedy, timing is everything.

3. What is your most memorable tour story?

In nine years of touring and performing in a party-oriented funk band, there are a seemingly infinite amount of memorable stories. Every show we have ever played has been a beautiful experience to be cherished forever. If I had to choose one story, though, I would have to say that last summer in a 1966 GM bus with a ridiculous, unforgivably grinding manual transmission that needed to be fixed (by us, because the vast majority of mechanics just scratched their heads and said "Wow, I can't believe you guys are actually driving that thing.") every hundred miles which only three of us were crazy enough to drive was truly unforgettable. We did two national tours and many regional/East Coast tours in this vehicle/home on wheels. The last journey in the bus brought us to Seattle and back to 30 miles from home (and all points in between) where the engine (which we had dubbed "Deep Water Horizon") finally threw in the grease-slathered towel and seized.

4. If all your band members were animals- who would be what?

Mary - a Purple Dragon
Al Al - a Griffin (half eagle/half lion)
Derrick - a Centaur (half horse/half man; bottom to top, respectively)
Lee - Animal (Muppet drummer from "Electric Mayhem")
Greg - a Majestic Unicorn
JP- the Donkey from a "donkey show"

Please check out our facebook event & Hope to see you there!

The Harmed Brothers tell all.

We are excited to bring The Harmed Brothers to Castaways this Thursday, May 12th. Doors open 9pm. Show starts at 10pm. $7 Tickets for sale at the door. +18.

The Harmed Brothers are an Americana/Folk-Rock/Indiegrass trio, based out of Eugene, Oregon. The group’s eclectic line up, which consists of Ray Vietti (guitar/vocalist), Alex Salcido (banjo/vocals/piano) and percussionist Adam Morehouse, creates a sound both melodic, and raucous, both gutsy and vulnerable. Often, the Brothers are compared to groups such as The Avett Brothers and Uncle Tupelo, and display that dynamic well, in both their spirited, energetic live performances, and their heartfelt songwriting, which equally showcases both songwriters Vietti and Salcido. Their most recent release, 2010′s All The Lies You Wanna Hear, has since garnered many gracious reviews, turning many heads and calling an ever-growing attention to these ambitious up and comers. Surely, bringing to light, a group of impassioned storytellers, as well as stellar performers.

Getting to know the Band...

1. What was the best show you have ever played and why?
Its really hard to say what was our best show.. we love everywhere we go and everyone we get play for, but being in Austin, TX early this year and being a part of Hillgrass Bluebilly Records' 4th Annual XSXSW Showcase along side acts like Willy "Tea" Taylor, Soda, Tom VandenAvond, Possessed by Paul James and so many other fantastic musicians and friends was definitely one of the highlights thus far.

2. Who is the funniest band member and Why?
You know we are all funny in our own right. The funny guy changes daily. funny "stuff" always seems to happen to Alex. Ray's always giving everyone nicknames that have no meaning at all which we all for some reason find funny. Joey is a walking accident. Adam well Adam's just Adam and thats funny enough.

3. What is your most memorable tour story? Lets just say we have some.

4. If all your band members were animals- who would be what?
Alex - Koala Bear -
Joey - if a cougar had a natural predator it would be Joey
Ray - Bird
Adam - Turtle
this question was by far our toughest to answer.

Hope to see you at the show!

Good Beer & Good Music.

I am really excited about the event at Castaways this Saturday, May 14th for two very simple reasons - Good Beer & Good Music.

Three Heads is officially invading Ithaca. Please help them through an epic party. All of their beers will be live and we want to kick kegs like it is our job.

They are also bringing some of the best music from Rochester with them to help celebrate the occasion. The Beaumonts, Sisters of Murphy and RootsCollider. The doors open at 8 ($7) and the music hits at 9.

More about the Beer: Three Heads Brewing is dedicated to one thing and that is making great beer. With roots in home brewing, this Rochester based company opened in December of last year and is being distributed throughout all of Upstate NY. Currently there are 4 brands being brewed: The Kind IPA, The Skunk Black IPA, The Java Sutra Coffee Porter and The Blimey English Pale Ale. The brewery has been garnering great feedback and has been featured in some national publications. Dan, Todd and Geoff believe in putting the beer first and strive to convert people one sip at a time.

I had a moment with Geoff Dale and had to ask him some pressing questions.
This first being, what was his favorite beer?
This is a a tricky question, however I work at Ithaca Beer and can tell you my top three based on my personal tastes and food pairing. He responded,
Picking my favorite of the 3HB beers is like picking your favorite kid. I love them all just the same. That being said, The Kind got the best report card this last marking period, makes its bed every morning and does volunteer work on the weekends.
The answer he provided me with made me quite happy because I can relate to the concept of your business being similar to a family, product or service. The Castaway's family is small but we have numerous children through out the week, some are angry and loud, others are soft and mellow and most of the weekend children are rowdy and like to party.

I also wanted to know what Geoff's best story about the Brewery was. Since brewery's are great places to work, I figured he would have a good one. This was his response:
There are two that stand out. First was being contacted by BeerAdvocate because they wanted to review our beers. We got solid ones and they have since invited us to partake in their beer festival in Boston. This is pretty impressive since this all happened after only being open about two months. Add on to that the fact we are not even legal there. They have helped make it so we will be legal and we are heading up in June. The other one was when I went into a bar here and had a customer spend a few minutes explaining to me how good the Skunk was and why I should order it. The bartender who served me knew who I was laughed as they gave me the beer.

OH MY DOG!

From your friends who brought you wing night, we now present:

H O T D O G H A P P Y H O U R

Please take the following steps...
1. Go to Castaways on any Wednesday between the hours of 5-8pm.
2. Order one of the Many dogs available
3. Proceed to hot dog heaven

Seattle Dog: cream cheese, grilled onions, grilled
spicy cabbage, and sriracha sauce

The other Dog was a creation of love: friend pickles, cole slaw, texas hot sauce and bacon.

Our bartender Slambert did this and as you can see by the documentation it was pretty slamming.

Although I wasn't able to taste one of these bad boys there was rumored to be fried oreos. We also have veggie dogs for the non carnivorous folks!
